Mumbai—West Indies booked their place in the Super 8s of the T20 World Cup with a clinical nine-wicket dismantling of Nepal at the Wankhede Stadium, sealing top spot in Group C with a match still to play.
Jason Holder’s career-best T20 World Cup figures of 4 for 27 anchored a disciplined bowling effort that restricted Nepal to 133 for 8. Matthew Forde set an early stranglehold with 1 for 10 from his opening burst, while Holder returned at the death to remove the dangerous Dipendra Singh Airee for 58 and mop up the tail.
Chasing 134, West Indies galloped home in just 15.2 overs. Shai Hope struck an unbeaten 61, his second fifty of the tournament, and Shimron Hetmyer lashed 46 not out off 28 balls as the pair put on an unbroken 98 for the second wicket. The result lifts the Caribbean side to three wins from three in England’s group and ends any lingering doubt over qualification.
Holder, named player of the match, praised the collective effort. “We were able to get a bit of movement, which was key, and I thought our bowlers bowled a really tight line to them up front,” he said. “Credit not only to me but also to Matthew—he set the tone and we adjusted from there.”
Nepal, winless in the competition, will play for pride against Scotland on Tuesday, while West Indies round out their group phase against Italy in Kolkata on Thursday. England, currently second in Group C, now target the remaining automatic berth when the Super 8s begin.
Sky Sports will show every ball of the tournament, climaxing with the final on Sunday 8 March.
