Barcelona have taken the unusual step of lodging a formal protest with Spanish football’s governing bodies after a sequence of refereeing decisions the club believes are undermining the integrity of the competition. In a letter delivered on Saturday 14 February to the Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF), its president, the head of the Technical Committee of Referees, the VAR chief and the federation’s director of legal affairs, the Catalan side expressed “deep concern over the repeated refereeing decisions it considers damaging to the game and lacking consistent criteria.”
The complaint lands just 48 hours before Hansi Flick’s squad head to Montilivi for a rare Monday-night Catalan derby against Girona, a fixture moved from its traditional slot to accommodate television schedules. Kick-off is set for 9.00 p.m. local time, and the club has published a global viewing guide for supporters tuning in from different time zones.
Training resumed under clear skies at the Ciutat Esportiva on Valentine’s Day after Friday’s storms, yet the session was missing one of January’s headline signings. Marcus Rashford, who has yet to make his competitive debut for the Blaugrana, did not take part and is now considered highly doubtful for the trip north. In contrast, Raphinha stepped up his comeback by completing part of the group workout, raising hopes he could be involved against Míchel’s side.
Off the pitch, Barcelona continue to field enquiries about veteran striker Robert Lewandowski. Chicago Fire remain the most aggressive MLS suitor, pushing to make the Polish international the flagship name of their summer rebuild. Lewandowski, who has five offers on the table, will postpone any decision until after the club’s forthcoming elections.
The club’s president, meanwhile, has acknowledged that relations with rivals Real Madrid have deteriorated to the point of “permanent discomfort,” contributing to what he termed an increasingly unworkable institutional environment.
Barça enter the derby four points clear of Girona in the table, but with the fallout from their refereeing protest sure to dominate the build-up, Monday’s contest will be played under more scrutiny than a routine regional clash usually attracts.
