Carrington, 19 June — Manchester United’s Under-18 side exorcised last season’s semi-final demons by defeating West Ham United 3-1 after extra-time to book a place in the Premier League Cup final against Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park.
A cagey opening 45 minutes gave little hint of the drama to follow. United monopolised possession but found clear chances scarce, the closest effort arriving when Jim Thwaites’ early corner picked out skipper Dan Armer, whose miscued volley drifted wide.
Against the run of play the Hammers struck first in the 32nd minute. A loose pass in midfield allowed Joel Kerr to surge forward and arrow a low drive beyond Cameron Byrne-Hughes into the far corner.
Parity was restored on the stroke of half-time. Armer bisected the West Ham back four, releasing Jacob Watson down the left. The full-back’s cut-back was swept home by JJ Gabriel for his 20th strike of the campaign.
The pattern persisted after the restart: United probing, West Ham countering. Byrne-Hughes produced a fingertip save to deny Andre Dike, while Jethro Medine’s curling effort clipped the crossbar. Noah Ajayi twice forced last-ditch blocks as regulation time ended 1-1, mirroring the 2023 semi-final that West Ham eventually won on penalties.
Extra-time brought fresh impetus. Kai Rooney, introduced at the start of the additional 30 minutes, rounded goalkeeper Hooper only to find the side-netting from an acute angle. Byrne-Hughes again thwarted Dike before United’s decisive burst.
Eight minutes into the second period of extra-time, substitute Douka Nkoto found Junior Brown wide on the right. The winger shifted inside onto his left foot and bent a sumptuous effort beyond Hooper into the far top corner.
Rooney then sealed it, exchanging a slick one-two reminiscent of his father’s trademark combinations before slotting low past the keeper to make it 3-1 and spark jubilant scenes along the Carrington touchline, where co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe watched alongside chief executive Omar Berrada, technical director Jason Wilcox and academy head Stephen Torpey.
United will now travel to south London aiming to lift the trophy that eluded them 12 months ago.
