What happens if India vs England semi-final washes out? ICC rules explained
Mumbai, 26 February – As India and England prepare to lock horns at Wankhede Stadium on Thursday for the second semi-final of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026, organisers have left nothing to chance in their bid to beat the weather that twice forced abandonments earlier in the tournament.
The International Cricket Council has armed the knockout phase with a comprehensive safety net: a reserve day for every semi-final and an additional 90 minutes of playing time on the main day, stretching to 120 minutes on the reserve day if required. For the final in Ahmedabad on 8 March, both the primary date and the designated back-up day carry the same 120-minute buffer.
Should rain intervene, the match will either continue or restart on the reserve day from the precise point of interruption. A minimum of 10 overs per side is mandatory for a valid result. If that threshold cannot be reached even after the reserve day, the team that finished higher in the Super 8 standings will advance.
That regulation could prove decisive for the hosts. England topped their Super 8 group with three victories, while India placed second in theirs. Consequently, a complete washout would send England through to Sunday’s final against New Zealand, who booked their berth with a nine-wicket win over South Africa in the first semi-final in Kolkata.
With forecasts currently predicting clear skies, fans will hope the contingency plans remain unused. Yet, with memories of earlier rain-marred fixtures still fresh, the ICC’s protocols ensure the tournament can reach its climax regardless of the elements.
