‘Happy with what we did’ – Slot defends summer transfer business amid Liverpool squad concerns

Liverpool head coach Arne Slot has mounted a robust defence of the club’s summer spending, insisting he has no regrets over last year’s recruitment drive despite mounting concerns about the depth of his current squad.
The Reds have invested close to £450 million on new talent in 2025, yet lie sixth in the Premier League with only nine fixtures remaining and face an uphill battle to secure Champions League football next season. A succession of long-term injuries has forced Slot to field players out of position and left the squad looking threadbare at a critical stage of the campaign.
Speaking ahead of tomorrow’s FA Cup quarter-final at Wolves, Slot rejected suggestions that Liverpool should have built a larger senior group during the previous window. “I’m happy with what we did last summer,” he told reporters. “We signed so many great players but you can’t predict that so many would be injured. Adaptation you can predict.
“It’s the model we are having that we don’t have 25 players over here. It hurts even more if you have three or four long-term injuries. I knew when I came in this was the model and I’m happy with that.”
The Dutchman’s stance comes amid growing scrutiny of a season derailed by fitness setbacks. Giovanni Leoni, Conor Bradley, Wataru Endo and Alexander Isak have all been ruled out for extended spells, while Jeremie Frimpong, Alisson Becker, Joe Gomez and Florian Wirtz have also spent time on the sidelines. Slot hinted that Wirtz could be available off the bench at Molineux, offering a glimmer of relief ahead of the cup tie.
Pundit Don Hutchison noted that Liverpool’s strength in depth has deteriorated markedly since last term, with the departure of several experienced figures leaving the bench looking increasingly inexperienced. Slot conceded that the simultaneous absences in key positions have stretched resources to breaking point, but argued that the scale of the injury crisis could not have been foreseen.
Nobody could accuse Liverpool of lacking ambition in the market, yet the club’s medical room has resembled a revolving door since August. With European qualification hanging in the balance, Slot maintains that the summer blueprint was sound, even if the execution has been undermined by misfortune.
Looking ahead, the Anfield hierarchy are expected to reassess their squad model to ensure the forthcoming transfer window guards against a repeat of the current predicament. For now, Slot must rely on the players still standing to salvage a disappointing season and keep alive dreams of cup success.
