Rio Ngumoha says Mohamed Salah isn’t the greatest winger ever

Liverpool’s Mohamed Salah may have etched his name into Anfield folklore with 251 goals and 121 assists since arriving from AS Roma, but analyst Rio Ngumoha believes the Egyptian forward still falls short of being history’s best winger. Speaking to ESPN during a rapid-fire Q&A, Ngumoha praised Salah’s decade-long impact on Merseyside yet ultimately handed the “greatest winger” title to Brazilian star Neymar.
Salah, now 33, has remained a pivotal figure for Liverpool throughout the current campaign, contributing offensively even when his form has fluctuated. His recent showing against Brighton illustrated his enduring influence: a goal, an assist, and a penalty won in a comprehensive 3-0 victory. Observers have also noted heightened defensive diligence from the veteran attacker this season.
Despite those credentials, Ngumoha opted for Neymar when pressed to name the finest winger of all time. The 34-year-old Santos forward has made only one league appearance in 2026 while recovering from a knee injury, yet Ngumoha still regards him as the benchmark for wide players.
In the same interview, Ngumoha revealed the rest of his positional Mount Rushmore: Brazilian Ronaldo as the top striker, Zinedine Zidane as the premier midfielder, Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk as the standout defender, and Lionel Messi as the greatest player in football history.
