Mirpur: Pakistan batter Salman Ali Agha has received an official reprimand and one demerit point under the ICC Code of Conduct following his reaction to a contentious run-out during the second ODI against Bangladesh at Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium on Friday.
The flashpoint arrived in the 39th over of Pakistan’s innings when Agha, then unbeaten on 64 off 62 balls, was adjudged short of his crease after Bangladesh captain Mehidy Hasan Miraz produced a sharp piece of awareness. Mohammad Rizwan nudged a Miraz delivery back toward the bowler, who used his boot to halt the ball’s momentum. Agha, standing outside his ground, leaned down to scoop the stationary ball and return it to Miraz, only for the skipper to seize it instantly and under-arm a throw into the stumps.
On-field umpire Tanvir Ahmed referred the decision upstairs, where third umpire Kumar Dharmasena ruled the ball remained in play and the dismissal legitimate. A visibly frustrated Agha departed the field exchanging words with Bangladesh wicketkeeper Litton Das and flinging his gloves to the turf, an act that drew the attention of match referee Neeyamur Rashid.
Rashid charged the 29-year-old with a Level 1 offence under Article 2.2 of the ICC Code of Conduct, relating to the abuse of cricket equipment. “The specific incident involved abusing cricket equipment on the ground while leaving the field,” Rashid told The Daily Star. “Regarding Salman Agha, he has no previous history of such behaviour. We have to maintain neutrality when we judge. Consequently, we have issued a reprimand and a demerit point.”
The referee confirmed that the verbal exchange with Das would not attract additional sanctions, citing extensive consultation with ICC protocols. “We also considered the law, our training and playing conditions. We discussed the matter with the ICC before making the final decision. From a neutrality standpoint, we delivered the judgement.”
Despite the drama, Pakistan prevailed by 128 runs under the Duckworth-Lewis-Stern method, setting up a decider in the three-match series at the same venue.
