Barcelona Receive Major Injury Boost—But It’s Not the One They Need

Barcelona have confirmed that midfielder Gavi has been cleared for selection ahead of Sunday’s La Liga meeting with Sevilla, ending a seven-month absence that began after only two appearances in August. The 21-year-old required surgery on the meniscus in his right knee and has missed the bulk of the 2025–26 campaign, but the club announced on the eve of the match that “the Blaugrana number six is back,” praising his “character, passion and intense approach for all things Barça.”
Gavi’s return gives Hansi Flick an additional midfield option at a time when Frenkie de Jong is sidelined with a hamstring problem. Marc Bernal and Pedri have carried a heavy load in de Jong’s absence, and while Gavi is unlikely to start immediately as he rebuilds match fitness, his presence will allow Flick to rotate more freely during a congested run-in that includes La Liga and Champions League obligations.
Yet the timing of Gavi’s comeback underscores a larger concern for the reigning Spanish champions: a depleted defense that has been patchwork for months. Both starting fullbacks, Alejandro Balde and Jules Koundé, are unavailable, as is center back Andreas Christensen. Gerard Martín, a natural left back, has been pressed into service as a central defender, Eric García has deputized at right back, and winter acquisition João Cancelo now operates on the left flank. The makeshift unit has survived against lesser opponents, but upcoming fixtures against Newcastle United in the Champions League, followed by league meetings with Rayo Vallecano and Atlético Madrid, will test the depth more severely.
While Gavi’s recovery offers a psychological lift and valuable squad depth in midfield, Barcelona’s immediate title and European ambitions hinge on whether Flick’s cobbled-together backline can hold firm until Balde and Koundé return.
