'I can't': England legend Kevin Pietersen quits Delhi Capitals role - here's why
New Delhi, 2026 – Kevin Pietersen has relinquished his position as mentor of Delhi Capitals ahead of the 19th Indian Premier League season, citing an inability to meet the time demands of the role. The 45-year-old former England captain, who joined the franchise in February 2025, informed fans of his decision via social media on Tuesday.
“I cannot be a mentor for Delhi Capitals in this IPL season,” Pietersen posted on X. “I can’t commit to the time that the job requires. Best wishes to all the players for this season! However, I’ll see you back in the commentary box! IPL is the world’s best league, and I can’t wait to see all of you soon!”
Pietersen’s departure leaves the Capitals’ backroom staff—Director of Cricket Venugopal Rao, head coach Hemang Badani, assistant coach Matthew Mott and bowling coach Munaf Patel—to continue preparations without the 2010 T20 World Cup winner’s direct input. During his single season as mentor, Pietersen worked closely with the quartet to shape strategy and player development.
Although stepping away from the mentoring role, Pietersen will remain a familiar face around IPL 2026 as part of the tournament’s commentary panel. His broadcast work ensures fans will still hear his analysis throughout the competition, which kicks off on 28 March when defending champions Royal Challengers Bengaluru host Sunrisers Hyderabad at Bengaluru’s M. Chinnaswamy Stadium.
Across 36 IPL appearances for Delhi Daredevils, Royal Challengers Bengaluru, Sunrisers Hyderabad and Pune Warriors India, Pietersen amassed 1,001 runs. Internationally, he scored more than 8,000 Test runs and over 4,000 in ODIs for England, establishing himself as one of the most recognisable batsmen of the modern era.
The Board of Control for Cricket in India has released the first phase of the 2026 schedule, running from 28 March to 12 April, with the remainder of the fixtures expected shortly.
