Packers will have a monster advantage in 2026, and they have the NFL to thank for it

Green Bay, WI — While much of the NFL braces for the logistical headaches of an unprecedented nine international games in 2026, the Green Bay Packers have emerged as the clearest beneficiary of the league’s global push. Because the NFL has already locked in the designated home teams for every 2026 overseas contest, the Packers are guaranteed to keep all of their Lambeau Field dates — a quirk that will give them a schedule few opponents can match.

Under the 17-game format, NFC clubs are on the nine-home-game side of the annual rotation. By avoiding any designation as a “home” team in London, Munich, São Paulo, Madrid, Mexico City, Sydney, or the league’s first-ever game in Paris, Green Bay will stage nine regular-season contests in front of its famously raucous crowd. No other NFC North club, and only a handful of NFC teams overall, will enjoy that luxury.

The Packers have danced with this dynamic before. In 2024 they opened the season in Brazil against the Eagles, but because that was classified as a Philadelphia home game, Green Bay still played nine true home dates at Lambeau. The only recent exception came in 2022, when the league shipped the Packers’ home matchup with the New York Giants to Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, trimming their Wisconsin slate to eight.

The 2026 itinerary could still send Matt LaFleur’s squad abroad as a visitor. The Lions will host a game in Munich, and the Saints will stage the inaugural Paris contest, and Green Bay is the designated road opponent for both. Yet from a competitive standpoint, facing a division rival or a conference foe on neutral soil may actually favor the Packers, neutralizing hostile environments and preserving the all-important ninth Lambeau game.

With international series now a permanent fixture, American franchises must balance global branding against competitive equity. For the Packers, the balance tilts decisively toward equity next season — nine home games, zero lost to passport stamps, and a potential leg up in the postseason race that could echo all the way through January.
