Michael Carrick’s Defensive Injury Updates Threaten Selection Headache vs. Newcastle

Manchester United could field a patched-up back line at St James’ Park on Wednesday after interim boss Michael Carrick revealed lingering doubts over Harry Maguire and Luke Shaw, leaving the resurgent Reds potentially without 75 per cent of their first-choice defence.
Maguire and Shaw were withdrawn during Saturday’s victory over Crystal Palace after reporting feeling unwell, and Carrick admitted on Tuesday that their availability for the Premier League trip to Newcastle will go down to the wire.
“We’re working towards it,” Carrick told reporters. “They weren’t feeling too good. We’ve still got a little bit of time to the game and we will just have to see how they feel. We’ll give them every chance.”
The pair’s uncertain status compounds an already stretched rearguard. Lisandro Martínez is definitely sidelined, while fellow centre-back Matthijs de Ligt has been out since November. Teenage left-back Patrick Dorgu is not expected back until late March or early April.
With only Diogo Dalot among the regular defensive starters certain to feature, Carrick may have to rely on youth in the heart of defence. Leny Yoro, 20, has deputised for Martínez in the past two fixtures and could be partnered by 19-year-old Ayden Heaven if Maguire fails to recover.
At full-back, Noussair Mazraoui is the likely stand-in for Shaw. The Morocco international replaced the England defender against Palace and, despite spending the festive period at the Africa Cup of Nations, is the most experienced alternative. Dalot’s versatility means he and Mazraoui could swap flanks depending on tactical requirements.
Senne Lammens will continue in goal, but the makeshift nature of the back four ahead of him presents a major obstacle as United look to extend a run that has seen them win six of seven league games under Carrick and climb to third in the table.
Victory on Tyneside would strengthen the club’s grip on a Champions League place; they currently sit six points clear of sixth-placed Chelsea, who face Aston Villa on the same evening. A draw at Villa Park would further aid United’s cause, while Liverpool—three points behind in fifth—are expected to overcome Wolves on Tuesday night.
Carrick, appointed in January with the club mired in the bottom half, has overseen a remarkable upturn that has United occupying the top-three territory they last enjoyed in May 2023. Whether that momentum can be maintained may depend on how his cobbled-together defence copes with Newcastle’s forward line.
