Iowa State AD Jamie Pollard Apologizes, Outlines Path to Replace Gymnastics Program

Ames, Iowa — Iowa State Director of Athletics Jamie Pollard publicly apologized on Thursday for the decision to discontinue the university’s women’s gymnastics program and provided new insight into the factors that led to the move, while also outlining the department’s next steps to identify a replacement women’s sport.

Speaking to reporters, Pollard acknowledged the disappointment felt by current gymnasts, alumni, and supporters, saying, “We’re sorry,” before detailing a history of challenges that ultimately made the program unsustainable. While declining to specify exact figures, Pollard indicated that ongoing operational difficulties and limited resources had placed the gymnastics team in a precarious position for several years.

The announcement marks the end of a sport that has been part of the Iowa State athletic portfolio for decades. Pollard emphasized that the department’s commitment to gender-equity opportunities under Title IX remains firm and that officials have already begun “an active, inclusive process” to survey campus and community stakeholders about which women’s sport could be added. No timeline has been set for finalizing the new offering, but Pollard said the goal is to introduce a program that aligns with student interest, conference dynamics, and available facilities.

Athletic department staff will work in conjunction with university administration, consulting national governing bodies and conducting feasibility studies before making a recommendation to the university president and Board of Regents. Pollard noted that any new sport must demonstrate potential for competitive success as well as sustainability from a scholarship and operating-budget standpoint.

Current gymnastics student-athletes who wish to remain at Iowa State will retain their athletic scholarships through graduation, and those exploring transfer options will receive departmental assistance. Pollard pledged ongoing support for the coaching staff during the transition period.
