Transfer Rumors, News: Man United Outline Preferred Midfield Targets

Manchester United have drawn up a four-player summer shopping list designed to refresh a midfield that could soon be without veteran anchor Casemiro, according to The Sun.
INEOS planners have told intermediaries that two central-midfield additions are the priority, with Newcastle’s Sandro Tonali, Crystal Palace prodigy Adam Wharton, Nottingham Forest’s Elliot Anderson, Brighton’s Carlos Baleba and Bournemouth’s Alex Scott all under active consideration.
The desire for a double pivot overhaul comes as United brace for the likely exit of Casemiro, whose departure would leave a sizeable gap in ball-winning and leadership terms.
Any incoming pair would be expected to offer both defensive security and progressive passing, qualities United believe have been missing for portions of the current campaign.
Competition is already heating up for one of the primary targets.
The Daily Mail reports that Bayern Munich have stepped up scouting missions on 23-year-old Anderson, while Manchester City have also been linked with the England international in recent weeks.
Forest’s relegation fight has not dimmed Anderson’s appeal; his six senior caps and all-action style have made him one of the most discussed home-grown prospects heading into the summer window.
Recruitment plans do not stop in the engine room.
United are also monitoring the market for a left-sided centre-back should captain Harry Maguire leave on a free, and they are assessing back-up goalkeepers with Altay Bayindir expected to move on after making only a handful of appearances since his arrival from Fenerbahçe.
Offloading unwanted assets remains central to the strategy.
Senior writer Mark Ogden notes that United still carry £422 million in outstanding transfer fees, £238 million of which must be settled by the end of next season.
The club will listen to offers for every high-cost acquisition of recent windows, including Rasmus Højlund (£64 m), Joshua Zirkzee (£36.5 m), Manuel Ugarte (£50.5 m), André Onana (£43.8 m) and Mason Mount (£55 m).
Højlund and Onana are already on season-long loans at Napoli and Trabzonspor respectively, and sources expect Marcus Rashford to secure a permanent move elsewhere even if Barcelona decline their £26 million option.
Jadon Sancho’s turbulent United career will conclude when his contract expires, freeing up £300,000 a week in wages, and full-back Tyrell Malacia will also depart on a free.
Maguire’s situation is less clear-cut; the 33-year-old has anchored the defence when fit and mentored younger teammates, yet a reduced one-year extension is the most United are willing to table at this stage.
Whether United can land their preferred midfield reinforcements may depend on outgoings and the final size of the summer budget, but the groundwork has been laid for a significant refresh at the heart of the pitch.
