He could stay five years – Laporta targets swift announcement of Flick extension
Barcelona president Joan Laporta says the club are poised to unveil a new contract for head coach Hansi Flick, with the agreement expected to run through 2028 and keep the German at the helm for the foreseeable future.
Speaking to RAC1 hours after his re-election, Laporta confirmed that negotiations are at an advanced stage and that Flick is eager to commit. “We want to renew his contract until 2028, giving him a year’s grace period each year,” Laporta said. “He’s in favour, and we’ll announce the agreement shortly because he’s very happy here.”
The president credited Flick with restoring order and identity to the squad, praising the coach’s discipline, clarity and alignment with Barça’s footballing philosophy. “Flick has contributed, while respecting our genuine style of football, the qualities of a disciplined person with extremely high standards,” Laporta noted. “He’s made the team function well again with the same players. He explains things clearly and addresses all questions.”
Laporta believes the extension would signal long-term stability at Camp Nou and suggested Flick could remain even longer. “It would demonstrate stability and that we’re winning. I think it’s possible he’ll stay with Barça for another five years. He’s a young man, with a lot of energy, and he’s happy in the city.”
The president also underlined his desire to retain sporting director Deco, whose rapport with Flick has been central to recent planning. “I would very much like to renew his contract. This rapport with Flick is very important. They know a lot about football,” Laporta said. “I hope Deco wants to continue. He’s a reserved, introverted person, happy with his work, he suffers a lot, he has a strong character. They get along very well and respect each other as people.”
Flick’s existing deal expires in 2027, but the coach has repeatedly expressed contentment in Catalonia. With Laporta’s fresh mandate, the club are now moving quickly to formalise the new terms and project continuity on and off the pitch.
