The 16-year-old first clipped in the cross that Viktor Gyokeres converted for the opener, then arrowed home his own finish to seal the result and ignite celebrations far beyond north London.

Within minutes of the final whistle, the Premier League confirmed Dowman as the competition’s youngest-ever goalscorer. In the same stroke, he eclipsed Cesc Fabregas’ long-standing mark to become Arsenal’s youngest scorer across all senior competitions.

A detail that quickly circulated inside Emirates Stadium underlined the surreal nature of the achievement: Dowman is younger than four of the ball-collection assistants working the touchlines. He remains eligible for under-16 football, meaning that on another Saturday he could have been leading the line for the Arsenal U16s against Ipswich Town rather than deciding a top-flight contest in the thick of a title race.

Further history is still within reach. Should Dowman find the net in the Champions League this season, he would displace Ansu Fati as the tournament’s youngest scorer. Fati was 17 years and 40 days when he struck for Barcelona; Dowman will not reach that age until February 2027, giving him almost a full year of eligibility.

Opportunities to set equivalent benchmarks in domestic cup competitions have already slipped away. A recent ankle injury ruled him out of earlier rounds, and Sunderland’s Chris Rigg claimed the League Cup record in 2023 at 16 years and 51 days. Even if Dowman were to appear and score in next weekend’s final, he would be 16 years and 81 days—30 days past the threshold.

Such fine margins, however, are unlikely to trouble the teenager. Contributing to an Arsenal side still competing on four fronts is remarkable; doing so before sitting his GCSEs is unprecedented.
