Man City boss Guardiola given two-game touchline ban
Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola will serve an immediate two-match touchline suspension after collecting his sixth yellow card of the campaign during Saturday’s FA Cup fifth-round victory at Newcastle United. The sanction, triggered under new Football Association regulations introduced this season, sidelines the Catalan for the Premier League trip to West Ham United on 14 March and the subsequent FA Cup quarter-final on the first weekend of April.
Guardiola’s latest caution came in the 42nd minute at St James’ Park when he approached fourth official Lewis Smith to protest a challenge by Kieran Trippier on winger Jeremy Doku. Referee Sam Barrott deemed the reaction worthy of a booking, pushing Guardiola past the disciplinary threshold that doubles the standard one-game ban once a manager reaches six cautions.
Although the 53-year-old will be barred from the technical area for the next two domestic fixtures, FA guidelines confirm that “finals of the Emirates FA Cup, EFL Cup, EFL Trophy… are exempt from any automatic touchline ban for the accumulation of cautions.” That loophole allows Guardiola to lead his side from the dugout in the Carabao Cup final against Arsenal at Wembley on 22 March, a fixture that falls neatly between the two matches he must miss.
Speaking ahead of the Champions League last-16 first leg against Real Madrid, Guardiola greeted the news with trademark sarcasm. “We have all the records in this country, all of them,” he told reporters. “We have the record of the manager with the most yellow cards. I want all records and now I have it. Two-game ban now and I will go on holidays the next two games. There are things after 10 years I cannot understand.”
City, who remain in contention for a historic quadruple, will now prepare for the London Stadium visit without their animated tactician on the touchline, while his staff shoulder added responsibility for in-game communication. The suspension does not affect European competition, leaving Guardiola free to take his usual place for both legs of the Champions League tie against Real Madrid on 11 and 17 March.
Guardiola’s disciplinary ledger has become a subplot to City’s relentless pursuit of silverware, yet the manager insists he will continue to defend his players robustly. “Review the action,” he said. “Of course I’m going to defend Doku and all my teams.”
With the Premier League title race, an FA Cup quarter-final and the Carabao Cup final looming, City must navigate a pivotal fortnight largely without the direct presence of the architect of their modern success.
