Liverpool and Aston Villa closing in on Lucas Bergvall transfer: report

London — Tottenham Hotspur’s resolve over prized midfielder Lucas Bergvall is about to be tested, with Liverpool and Aston Villa emerging as the most aggressive suitors for the 20-year-old Swede, according to well-placed sources in Sweden and England.
Bergvall, sidelined since early February with an ankle complaint and targeting a late-March comeback, has watched from the treatment table as Spurs have slid toward the lower reaches of the Premier League table. That slump has encouraged several top-flight rivals to explore whether Tottenham would consider cashing in on one of their brightest academy graduates.
Swedish outlet Fotboll Direkt describes the possibility of a sale as a “hot topic” inside the club, even though officials have publicly insisted the player is not for sale. Tottenham reportedly quoted €65 million when enquiries were made last summer and have since “made it clear to everyone” that Bergvall, along with fellow young midfielders Pape Sarr and Archie Gray, is central to the long-term rebuild.
Yet sources tell FourFourTwo that Liverpool have now “come forward” with a concrete expression of interest, while Aston Villa—currently pushing for another top-four finish—explored a January swoop and have maintained dialogue with the player’s camp. Chelsea are also monitoring developments, though their level of intent is described as harder to quantify.
Any deal would be complicated by Djurgårdens’ 10–15 per cent sell-on clause, agreed when Bergvall moved from Sweden to north London for an initial £8.5 million in 2024. Transfermarkt presently values the midfielder at €20 million, but Spurs’ internal valuation remains significantly higher, reflecting both his potential and the increasingly inflated domestic market.
Interim head coach Igor Tudor is already without James Maddison, Rodrigo Bentancur, Dejan Kulusevski and Mohammed Kudus in midfield, while Cristian Romero serves a four-match suspension and defensive stalwarts Ben Davies, Destiny Udogie and Kevin Danso nurse injuries. The club hierarchy face a dilemma: keep an asset they view as foundational, or sanction a record sale that would help fund a wider squad overhaul.
Liverpool, preparing for another Champions League assault under Arne Slot, see Bergvall as a dynamic No. 8 who could relieve ageing legs in the engine room. Villa, meanwhile, believe the Swede’s progressive passing profile would dovetail with Unai Emery’s high-tempo system and provide depth behind Youri Tielemans and John McGinn.
With the summer window looming, negotiations are expected to intensify. Spurs maintain they hold all the cards; Liverpool and Villa are increasingly confident a deal can be struck if European qualification—or the lack thereof—forces Daniel Levy’s hand.
