Julian Ryerson: Barcelona’s stance on pursuit of Man United target
Manchester United’s search for a dynamic full-back has zeroed in on Borussia Dortmund’s Julian Ryerson, but the Premier League club now face a fresh hurdle after Barcelona entered the race for the Norway international.
United, who added Patrick Dorgu and Diogo Leon to their ranks in 2025, still believe the squad lacks thrust from the flanks. Diogo Dalot and Noussair Mazraoui have struggled to provide consistent attacking output, while Luke Shaw’s advancing years and Dorgu’s raw development timeline have left the hierarchy eager for another option who can contribute at both ends of the pitch.
Ryerson, 28, has emerged as the standout candidate. The Viking academy product has flourished since joining Dortmund in 2023, registering 13 assists in 29 appearances this season and establishing himself among Europe’s most productive full-backs. Equally adept on the right or left, Ryerson offers the positional flexibility United crave, potentially allowing one signing to cover both flanks.
According to The Peoples Person, United are prepared to triple Ryerson’s current wages to secure what they view as a ready-made upgrade on Dalot, who continues to be linked with Real Madrid. Yet any deal will not be straightforward. Spanish outlet Fichajes reports that Barcelona coach Hansi Flick has personally requested the club pursue Ryerson, seeing the Norwegian as an immediate-impact addition to a squad in need of full-back reinforcements at Camp Nou.
Barcelona’s interest adds a layer of complexity to negotiations. Dortmund are under no pressure to sell: Ryerson’s contract runs until 2028, and the Bundesliga side have indicated they intend to retain the defender. United hope that Barcelona’s well-documented financial constraints will curb their ability to structure a competitive offer, leaving the English club in pole position should Dortmund soften their stance.
With a permanent Manchester United manager set to be appointed this summer, the incoming boss will have the final say on whether to press ahead with a move that could reshape the club’s full-back department for years to come.
