Carrick urges perspective as Man United unbeaten run ends

St James’ Park, Newcastle – Michael Carrick called for calm after Manchester United’s 2-1 defeat to Newcastle brought the club’s first loss under his interim stewardship and ended a league unbeaten stretch that dated back to December.
A stoppage-time strike from William Osula sealed the Magpies’ victory on Wednesday night, punishing a listless United display that never capitalised on Jacob Ramsey’s first-half dismissal. Despite the extra man, United’s front line was starved of service and the visitors rarely threatened a organised Newcastle rearguard.
Speaking afterwards, Carrick refused to question his squad’s attitude and instead pointed to technical failings rather than a lack of character.
“It was just the quality and the performance; it wasn’t character or wanting to win or anything like that,” he said. “Credit to Newcastle, they deserve to win tonight, so it hurts me to say that, but that’s how it was, and we need to get back to working and be better for the next game.”
The result dents United’s push for Champions League qualification, yet Carrick was quick to place the setback in context when pressed on whether the club’s mentality should be doubted.
“We’ve lost one game, alright? So, we haven’t played well enough, but, in the grand scheme of things, we’re in a decent position, you know? Tonight hurts because we don’t like losing games, but we’ll be better for the next one.”
The former midfielder, placed in temporary charge following the club’s recent managerial change, emphasised the need to absorb lessons quickly. “There’s lessons in it, and we need to learn together as a group. We’ve got time to look at it and improve.”
With fixtures running out in the race for a top-four finish, Carrick will hope the harsh schooling on Tyneside serves as a timely jolt rather than a fatal blow to United’s European ambitions.
