Marcus Rashford abuser faces significant jail time
Barcelona, Spain – The 19-year-old Real Oviedo supporter who racially abused Marcus Rashford during a La Liga fixture in September is facing a potential 15-month prison sentence, the Public Prosecutor’s Office of the Principality of Asturias has confirmed.
The incident occurred in the 88th minute of Barça’s 3-1 victory at the Carlos Tartiere stadium, when Rashford stepped up to take a corner that ultimately led to Ronald Araujo’s game-sealing header. Mobile footage captured the fan hurling racist slurs, including repeated use of the N-word, at the England forward; the clip quickly amassed millions of views across social platforms and prompted widespread condemnation.
Prosecutors have now requested the custodial term alongside a €2,880 fine and €2,000 in compensation to the victim. While the court has yet to hand down a final ruling, the move signals an increasingly robust stance against discriminatory conduct in Spanish football stadiums.
Rashford, currently on a season-long loan from Manchester United, has enjoyed a career resurgence since arriving at Camp Nou in summer 2025. The 28-year-old has registered 10 goals and 13 assists in 35 appearances, playing a pivotal role in Barcelona’s Supercopa triumph and trailing only teenage sensation Lamine Yamal in total goal contributions. Barça are expected to trigger the £26 million buy clause inserted in the loan agreement, a figure significantly lower than the £40 million option negotiated with previous loan club Aston Villa.
Club officials declined to comment on the legal proceedings, but Barcelona reiterated their “zero-tolerance” policy toward racism and confirmed they are cooperating with Asturian authorities. The case is scheduled to be heard in the coming weeks.
