Guardiola reveals why City have to keep learning and evolving
Pep Guardiola insists that the relentless need to adapt is what keeps his role at Manchester City as captivating as ever, even after nine trophy-laden seasons at the Etihad Stadium.
Speaking on the eve of Wednesday evening’s Premier League meeting with Nottingham Forest, the City manager reflected on how both he and the team have been forced to evolve in order to stay ahead of the chasing pack. Arsenal currently lead the title race, but Guardiola’s side remain firmly in contention as the campaign reaches its decisive phase.
Since arriving in the summer of 2016, Guardiola has collected six Premier League winners’ medals and overseen a stylistic revolution, yet he is adamant that neither he nor the players can afford to stand still.
“I’m not the same manager who arrived,” he told reporters. “I’m not the same when we win or we lose. People learn. It’s constant.”
Guardiola cited early lessons in English football—such as his second competitive fixture away at Stoke City—as proof of the education required to succeed in the Premier League. Long balls and direct transitions were unfamiliar after spells in Spain and Germany, but City countered by “making a thousand million passes.” Now, with opponents increasingly deploying man-marking systems, fresh solutions are demanded on a weekly basis.
“You take a look and have to adjust this and that,” he explained. “Every game is different. The way Sean Dyche played is different to now under Vitor Pereira. How they [Nottingham Forest] play press, set pieces—that is nice.”
The Catalan also underlined the importance of securing Champions League qualification, describing it as “the most important title” for the club’s stability. City are on course to extend their streak of successive top-four finishes—the longest of any English club in the past 11–12 years—and Guardiola admitted the mental pressure of preserving that record drives him on.
“Last season was a lot of pressure and I felt it higher than ever [with the threat] of not qualifying for the Champions League,” he said, referencing the dramatic final-day win over Fulham. “That was the most mentally difficult one. This stuff is a challenge for me.”
With new signings arriving each summer, Guardiola feels re-energised by the responsibility of integrating fresh faces while maintaining standards.
“I cannot disappoint them,” he added. “Being there again, one more season again being there and close to qualifying for the Champions League… Still being there with chances in all competitions is really good.”
City’s clash with Forest kicks off at 19:30 (UK) on Wednesday, offering another opportunity to keep pace at the summit and extend Guardiola’s remarkable run of consistency.
