Barcelona icon Eto’o backs Laporta on eve of presidential vote

Barcelona, March 14 – On the eve of FC Barcelona’s presidential elections, another club legend has entered the fray. Former Cameroon striker Samuel Eto’o used his Instagram account during Saturday’s official day of reflection to urge Barcelona’s socis to re-elect Joan Laporta, the man who brought him to the Camp Nou in 2004.

Eto’o, who scored 130 goals in 199 appearances and helped deliver two Champions League titles under Laporta’s first board, posted a bilingual French-English message that left no doubt about his preference in Sunday’s ballot.

“My President for life, My brother, My friend,” the 42-year-old wrote. “Tomorrow is an important day for all those who love FC Barcelona. I am a living witness to the incredible history you helped write at this legendary club. Your passion, your work, and your love for these colors have inspired an entire generation.”

The striker concluded with a direct appeal to the electorate: “To all the supporters who love our beautiful team: the time has come to stand behind the man who represents this history and these values. Vote for him.”

The endorsement lands at a critical moment. While Laporta is still considered the favourite, rival candidate Víctor Font has gained traction in recent days, notably after securing public support from current first-team coach and club icon Xavi Hernández.

Eto’o’s intervention mirrors his 2021 move, when he released a video encouraging members to back Laporta in the last election cycle. Then, as now, the Cameroonian framed the vote as a choice between continuity of Barcelona’s identity and an uncertain future.

With ballots set to be cast this Sunday, March 15, the battle for the presidency now features two of the club’s most influential figures on opposite sides: Xavi with Font, and Eto’o with Laporta. The deciding voice will be that of the 140,000-plus socis eligible to vote.
