Why did VAR overturn Gerard Martin’s red card for Barcelona vs Atletico?

Barcelona and Atlético Madrid’s first of three consecutive meetings exploded into controversy on Saturday night when a potential sending-off for Barça defender Gerard Martin was downgraded after a VAR intervention, a decision that left the visitors incensed and reduced to ten men themselves.
The flashpoint arrived early in the second half at Estadi Olímpic Lluís Companys. Referee Mateo Busquets Ferrer initially flourished a straight red card against Martin for a studs-up challenge on Atlético playmaker Thiago Almada. Replays, however, showed the 22-year-old full-back won the ball cleanly before his follow-through caught Almada high on the ankle.
VAR Mario Melero López immediately recommended an on-field review. Busquets Ferrer studied the monitor and reversed his verdict, replacing the red with a yellow. Explaining the U-turn in Mundo Deportivo, refereeing analyst César Barrenechea Montero said: “There was no intent to harm; the home player’s safety may have been at risk, but I think a yellow card is sufficient.”
The reversal preserved Barcelona’s numerical parity at a pivotal moment. Atlético had already lost Nico González to a first-half red for a foul on Lamine Yamal, and the Spanish capital club believed justice had swung decisively against them when Martin escaped the same fate. Players and staff remonstrated angrily on the touchline, but the decision stood.
According to statistics outfit MisterChip, the incident marks the first time since VAR’s introduction in La Liga that a red card shown to a Barcelona player has been rescinded.
The 1-1 final scoreline keeps both sides locked in a tight race at the top of the table, yet the officiating narrative will dominate the build-up to the Copa del Rey and Champions League ties that follow over the next three weeks.
