Why Barcelona aren’t thinking about bringing Xavi Simons back
Barcelona have no intention of re-signing Xavi Simons this summer despite growing speculation that the Dutch attacker is eager to return to Camp Nou, sources have told Diario Sport.
Simons, currently battling relegation concerns with Tottenham in the Premier League, is believed to have made it known that he would welcome a move back to the club he left in 2019. The chatter has intensified during the international break, when domestic fixtures pause and transfer rumors fill the void.
Yet Barca’s hierarchy have already ruled out pursuing the 21-year-old for a quartet of reasons. Foremost is cost: Tottenham are understood to value Simons at around €45 million, a figure the Catalan giants are unwilling to meet as they continue to navigate a delicate financial landscape.
Beyond the price tag, club officials fear that sinking such a sum into a former academy graduate would transmit an undesirable message to La Masia talents. Simons departed Barcelona of his own accord five years ago, and the club’s brain trust contend that lavishly re-acquiring him could undermine the development pathway for players who remained.
Sporting priorities also push Simons down the wish list. Deco and the technical secretariat have centered their summer budget on securing a proven center-back and a center-forward, two positions coach staff deem essential for next season’s competitiveness. Additionally, the club must reach a definitive resolution on Marcus Rashford’s future, with the Brazilian’s campaign hampered by persistent hamstring problems.
Taken together, those factors leave Simans’ hoped-for homecoming off the table for the foreseeable future, no matter how strong his personal desire to rejoin the Blaugrana may be.
