'We wanted to respect the ball' - Rosenior blasts ref after bizarre huddle incident
Liam Rosenior has launched an extraordinary attack on referee Paul Tierney, accusing the official of losing focus on the decisions that matter after Tierney ended up standing inside Chelsea’s pre-match huddle at Stamford Bridge.
The surreal scene unfolded moments before kick-off in Chelsea’s 1-0 defeat to Newcastle. Under Rosenior, the Blues have taken to forming a tight circle around the match ball on the centre circle, a ritual led by the players’ leadership group “to respect the ball and show unity”. On Saturday, Tierney was already stationed on the halfway line, ball under his arm, awaiting Newcastle’s kick-off when the Chelsea squad converged around him. Television pictures showed Cole Palmer smiling and wrapping an arm around the perplexed referee, while Wesley Fofana and others exchanged bemused glances as Tierney remained motionless in the middle of the huddle until it dispersed.
Rosenior, who revealed Tierney had raised the huddle in a pre-match briefing with his assistant, believes the official’s pre-occupation with the routine contributed to a crucial penalty being missed when Nick Woltemade appeared to fell Palmer inside the area.
“If Paul had focused more on his job, which was to make the right decision, we have a penalty today,” the Chelsea head coach said. “I don’t think anybody in this room can say that Woltemade doesn’t kick Palmer down in the box.”
The manager, already mindful of previous touch-line flashpoints – notably his complaint about Arsenal staff encroaching into Chelsea’s half during the warm-up at the Emirates – insists the huddle carries no intent to antagonise opponents. “My players made the decision that they wanted to be around the ball, to respect the ball and show unity and leadership. There is nothing that they’re doing with that huddle that is disrespectful to the opposition.”
Rosenior confirmed he will take his grievance to the Professional Game Match Officials Limited (PGMO) in search of clarification. “I’ll be speaking to the refs and just trying to get an understanding of why that happened today. We were told in the rule book it’s about timing. You can be where you want on timing. I just want to find a solution to this because we’re actually talking about something that’s nowhere near as important as what’s happening on the pitch.”
Former Premier League assistant referee Darren Cann suggested Tierney’s positioning was standard protocol. “As it was Newcastle’s kick-off, the referee took control of the ball on the halfway line and was there to prevent any potential issues,” Cann explained.
Yet the incident has split opinion. In the Sky Sports studio, Jamie Redknapp laughed off the episode – “A lot of fans would love to have a cuddle with Cole Palmer” – while Daniel Sturridge admitted confusion over both the huddle’s location and the referee’s presence inside it.
For Rosenior, the debate merely diverts attention from what he sees as a match-defining officiating error. “There is more focus and emphasis on the things that don’t matter,” he lamented. “Let’s focus on the things that are important. My team showing unity is not as important as getting the decisions right on the pitch.”
Chelsea left the weekend empty-handed, but their manager’s ire was directed firmly at the man in the middle – and the bizarre image of a referee encircled by blue shirts may linger longer than the scoreline itself.
