Wayne Rooney Set to Captain England

London Stadium will host a glittering charity showcase on May 31, 2026, as Wayne Rooney leads England onto the pitch for the 20th-anniversary edition of Soccer Aid for Unicef. The Manchester United great has been confirmed as England captain for the star-studded fixture, which pits the Three Lions against a formidable World XI managed by sprint legend Usain Bolt.

Rooney, Old Trafford’s all-time leading scorer, will wear a commemorative white kit inspired by Sir Alf Ramsey’s 1966 World Cup winners, marking six decades since England’s historic triumph. More than 60,000 spectators are expected to fill the Stratford venue, with every ticket sold helping to fund UNICEF programmes for vulnerable children worldwide.

Opposing England will be a World XI squad featuring former United goalkeeper Edwin van der Sar, ex-Barcelona left-back Jordi Alba and Italian defensive stalwart Leonardo Bonucci. Pop icon Robbie Williams, co-founder of the initiative, will take the home dugout opposite Bolt in what organisers promise will be the most competitive Soccer Aid to date.

Speaking ahead of the match, Rooney expressed his excitement at pulling on the England shirt once more. “I can’t wait for Soccer Aid for Unicef this year,” he said. “Me, Coleen and the boys love the atmosphere and the brilliant family occasion that Soccer Aid always is.” The striker, who recently revealed he has lost hearing in his left ear, stressed the cause behind the spectacle: “Last year, Coleen travelled to Poland with UNICEF and saw first-hand how the money raised is supporting children with disabilities who fled the war in Ukraine… so please buy a ticket and support this amazing cause.”
