Madrid—Barcelona must now factor in more than just Diego Simeone’s tactics when they visit the Riyadh Air Metropolitano on Thursday for the first leg of the Copa del Rey semi-final. Atlético captain Koke has issued a blunt warning about the playing surface, describing it as a potential hazard for both sides.

Speaking after Sunday’s 1-0 league loss to Real Betis, the midfielder did not hide his frustration. “Honestly, the pitch is not in good condition. We slip, the turf comes up… A team like Atlético needs the pitch to be good in order to play,” he said. “We’re expected to perform at a high level, and we need a pitch of that level to be able to do so; a top-quality surface.”

Koke stressed that while the squad must still improve its performances, the sub-standard turf is already hampering their game. “Being realistic, we have to play better. It’s not an excuse, but here we’re slipping, and the best conditions are like the pitch was the other day at La Cartuja.”

Club officials have reportedly decided against re-laying the grass until the summer, meaning Barcelona will have to contend with the same patchy ground that has troubled Atlético in recent weeks. The timing is hardly ideal for a last-four tie that could hinge on small margins.
