Benfica president Rui Costa has broken his silence over the controversy that erupted during his club’s recent encounter with Real Madrid, when Vinícius Júnior told referee François Letexier he had been racially abused, prompting suspicion to fall on 18-year-old Benfica midfielder Gianluca Prestianni.
Addressing reporters before the Lisbon side departed for the return leg in Madrid, Costa delivered an unequivocal defence of both the player and the club’s anti-racist ethos. “We have spoken with everyone involved,” he said. “This situation is uncomfortable for the club and for the player, who is being crucified. I guarantee he is not a racist player; otherwise he would not represent Benfica.”
Costa stressed that the incident, which occurred on the pitch in full view of the television cameras, must be left to the ongoing investigation. “Without downplaying the seriousness of the matter, we must wait for the competent bodies to reach their conclusions before making any hasty judgments,” he added.
The president underlined that Benfica’s identity is rooted in inclusion and anti-racism, values he insisted would never be compromised. “Benfica would never accept racist players in its squad,” Costa declared. “Our history is built on these principles, and if I ever had the slightest doubt about a player’s attitudes, I would be the first to report it.”
Costa also acknowledged the broader context of on-field provocations, noting that “insults are frequent on both sides,” but maintained that Prestianni has been deeply affected by the allegations. “We have confidence in our player,” he concluded. “He has our full support.”
Benfica now prepares for the decisive second leg in Madrid, determined to keep the focus on football while awaiting the final findings of the investigating authorities.
