Venezia Rewrite the Record Books with Eight Straight Wins, Outpacing Europe’s Elite
Frosinone, Italy – While the giants of La Liga and Ligue 1 have grabbed global headlines this season, it is Serie B outfit Venezia who now own the longest active winning streak in world football. Giovanni Stroppa’s side made it eight consecutive victories on Saturday, downing second-placed Frosinone away from home to open a three-point cushion at the summit and leave Real Madrid, Paris Saint-Germain and even Inter trailing in their rear-view mirror.
The 1-0 triumph at the Stadio Benito Stirpe was anything but routine. Frosinone arrived on the back of their own strong form and threw everything at the Lagunari, yet Venezia absorbed the pressure before striking decisively to extend a run that began back on 2 November. Since a sobering defeat at Catanzaro left them sixth and eight points off the pace, the Venetians have collected eleven wins and a single draw from twelve fixtures, a return that mirrors Inter’s dominance in Serie A but stands alone across Europe’s top tiers.
Stroppa, however, refused to reach for superlatives after the final whistle. “Before, we had to win them all; now I say we still have to win them all,” he told reporters. “In this league, whoever you face plays the match of their life. Every game is tricky.”
The statistics support his caution. Four clubs sit within six points of Venezia, with Monza reclaiming second after a 2-1 defeat of Avellino and Palermo—led by former Venezia boss Filippo Inzaghi—lurking fourth. Inzaghi’s current talisman is Joel Pohjanpalo, the striker he lured away from the Penzo a year ago and who now tops the Serie B scoring chart with 15 goals.
Yet it is Venezia who have become the division’s box-office attraction. Sporting director Antonelli fine-tuned the squad in January, though the coach’s preferred XI has remained largely untouchable. From goalkeeper Filip Stankovic, back to his best after an injury-plagued campaign last year, to centre-back Michael Svoboda and midfield metronome Gianluca Busio, Stroppa has forged a side that swarms opponents and entertains supporters in equal measure. Wingers Kike Perez and Nicholas Yeboah provide the thrust, while the collective intensity has convinced even the most sceptical fans—some of whom called for Stroppa’s dismissal in October—that promotion is a realistic ambition.
The club’s upward trajectory is not confined to the pitch. Construction on a new stadium is under way, with completion slated for 2027, and sources within the Venetian hierarchy hint that high-profile investors have already held exploratory talks. Securing a return to Serie A before the ribbon is cut would, in the words of one insider, “not be a bad calling card.”
For now, Stroppa keeps his players grounded. The championship picture can shift quickly in Italy’s second tier, and the fixture list offers no respite. Still, with the rest of Europe’s elite unable to match their winning sequence, Venezia have earned the right to dream—if only between training sessions.
