UEFA officially cancel Finalissima due to political tensions
UEFA has formally scrapped the 2024 Finalissima, the intercontinental showpiece that was to pit 2022 World Cup winners Argentina against reigning European champions Spain in Qatar on 27 March, citing mounting political tensions in the Middle East.
The governing body confirmed the cancellation on Sunday, ending days of speculation that had circulated since diplomatic unease in the region intensified. After consulting Qatar’s organising committee, the Argentine Football Association and other stakeholders, UEFA concluded that no suitable workaround could be found.
In a statement, European football’s governing body said it examined a range of contingency plans: staging the match at Madrid’s Santiago Bernabéu on the original date, converting the tie into a two-leg affair with games in Madrid and Buenos Aires, or shifting to a neutral European venue. Each scenario was ultimately deemed “unacceptable” by the Argentine Football Association.
Argentina countered with proposals to shift the contest to 31 March or to the post-World Cup calendar, but those ideas were also rejected, bringing negotiations to a definitive close.
“It is a great disappointment for UEFA and the organisers that circumstances and timing have deprived the teams of the opportunity to compete for this prestigious trophy in Qatar, a country that has repeatedly demonstrated its ability to host world-class international events in state-of-the-art facilities,” the statement read.
UEFA praised the efforts of the Qatari authorities, Real Madrid CF—who stepped in at short notice—and the Spanish Football Federation for their flexibility during the protracted discussions.
Had the match gone ahead, it would have marked the first senior meeting between Inter Miami forward Lionel Messi and Barcelona prodigy Lamine Yamal.
UEFA closed its announcement by expressing hope that peace will soon return to the region, leaving the fate of the next Finalissima edition uncertain.
