That's all you need: Ricky Ponting reveals 'big decision' behind India's T20 World Cup title
NEW DELHI — Ricky Ponting has pinpointed India’s bold call to persist with Sanju Samson as an opener as the pivotal move that underpinned their ICC Men’s T20 World Cup triumph, saying the unwavering trust shown by stand-in captain Suryakumar Yadav and the coaching staff proved decisive.
Samson arrived at the tournament under a cloud of scrutiny, having managed only 46 runs in five T20Is against New Zealand in the immediate build-up. His opportunity came only after Abhishek Sharma was taken ill ahead of the league-stage meeting with Namibia in New Delhi. Recalled for a must-win Super Eight clash against Zimbabwe, the 29-year-old seized the moment and never looked back.
Over the next three weeks Samson re-wrote the record books: an unbeaten 97 against the West Indies at Eden Gardens, 89 in the semi-final against England at the Wankhede, and another 89 in the final against New Zealand at the Narendra Modi Stadium. His 321 runs from five innings are the most by an Indian batter in a single edition of the competition, earning him both the Player of the Tournament award and enduring praise from one of Australia’s greatest captains.
“For India to stick with him at the top there, that was a big call to make,” Ponting told The ICC Review. “A big decision, but one that worked out really well in the end. If you get the backing of the coaching staff and the captain, then that’s all you need. Just a pat on the back or an arm around the shoulder to say, ‘we’re sticking with you, we believe in you.’ When you’ve got the quality that Sanju’s got, and the confidence of the captain and coach behind you, that’s when great things can happen.”
Ponting was equally effusive about Suryakumar’s leadership, noting that India’s success was built on more than raw numbers. Apart from an unbeaten 84 against the United States, the skipper’s personal returns were modest, yet he still finished the campaign holding the trophy aloft.
“It would have been really interesting to see how Surya has interacted with Abhishek and Sanju over the last few weeks,” Ponting said. “That’s where the real stories will come out on true leadership. It’s about a lot more than what they do off the field, the things that people don’t see and how they interact with their players. He didn’t have a great time himself as a player, but still, he’s standing at the end holding up a World Cup trophy.”
With Samson’s pyrotechnics at the top of the order and Suryakumar’s steady hand in the dressing room, India turned a potentially contentious selection gamble into the cornerstone of a memorable global title.
