MADRID—Atlético Madrid’s Cívitas Metropolitano stadium turned into a cauldron of controversy as a dramatic 2–1 defeat to Barcelona ignited a firestorm over Spanish officiating and the role of VAR.
The first of three scheduled clashes between the Spanish giants this month began with both sides vying for top spot, but it was referee Mateo Busquets Ferrer and VAR Melero López who became the central figures. Already reduced to ten men after Nico González was dismissed for a reckless challenge on Lamine Yamal, Atlético believed parity had been restored when Busquets Ferrer produced a straight red to Barcelona defender Gerard Martín for a heavy tackle on Thiago Almada.
Yet López intervened, urging the official to review the pitch-side monitor. After consultation, Busquets Ferrer rescinded the red, brandishing a yellow instead. Barcelona, still at full strength, went on to score a late winner and open a seven-point lead atop La Liga.
Atlético CEO Miguel Ángel Gil Marín launched a scathing attack post-match, citing released audio in which López described Martín’s challenge as “a normal part of the game.”
“When we see the images and listen to the audio shared by the Federation, all we can do is feel ashamed,” Gil Marín said. “VAR should only intervene to correct uninterpretable errors, not to decide in place of the main referee.”
He contrasted the incident with a recent Technical Committee of Referees (CTA) statement that an identical challenge in the Real Betis–Rayo Vallecano match warranted a sending-off. “The CTA explained that play should have been a red card, yet yesterday VAR led the referee astray, overstepping its bounds,” he added.
Gil Marín also referenced last weekend’s Madrid derby, where Atlético were denied a penalty after Dani Carvajal’s foul on Marcos Llorente. “It’s not normal that different decisions are made for identical plays, that the criteria change, and that we don’t know what to expect,” he concluded.
The defeat leaves Diego Simeone’s side searching for answers on the pitch and demanding accountability off it as the title race takes a back seat to a broader debate over refereeing standards in Spain.
