Telegraph: Man Utd ‘in the market’ for ‘contingencies’ in case ‘unbelievable’ star leaves in summer
Manchester United are already drawing up contingency plans at centre-back amid growing uncertainty over the future of club stalwart Harry Maguire, Telegraph Sport understands.
The 32-year-old’s existing deal expires in June and, with no agreement yet reached on an extension, United have begun sounding out potential replacements should the England international ultimately walk away from Old Trafford after seven years of service.
Maguire is currently locked in negotiations with the club’s hierarchy, but fresh terms hinge on the defender accepting a reduction on his present £180,000-a-week salary. Since January he has been free to speak with overseas clubs and, while AC Milan explored the possibility of a winter move, Maguire opted to remain in Manchester, where he has started every match under interim boss Michael Carrick.
His recent performances have underlined his enduring value: Maguire was named Man of the Match in last month’s statement victory over league leaders Arsenal and earned plaudits from club legend Paul Scholes, who lauded the centre-back’s “unbelievable” character following the derby triumph over Manchester City.
Despite Maguire’s resurgence, United are not leaving anything to chance. Telegraph reporter Mike McGrath says the club are “in the market for centre-backs … contingencies are being looked at” should contract talks collapse.
Carrick still boasts a deep stable of central-defensive options. Maguire has struck up a robust partnership with Lisandro Martínez, while Dutch international Matthijs de Ligt is targeting a March return from a long-term injury. Highly rated teenagers Ayden Heaven, 19, and Leny Yoro, 20, are also pushing for minutes as the club balance present competitiveness with future planning.
With the summer window looming, United’s recruitment staff face the delicate task of preparing for life after Maguire without undermining ongoing efforts to convince him to stay.
