Shivam Dube’s Two Boundaries as Crucial as Sanju Samson’s 97, Insists Gautam Gambhir
Mumbai, 24 June 2024 — India head coach Gautam Gambhir has underlined that cricket’s quieter contributions deserve the spotlight, declaring Shivam Dube’s back-to-back boundaries in the penultimate over against the West Indies every bit as vital as Sanju Samson’s headline-grabbing, unbeaten 97 that powered the hosts into the tournament semi-finals.
Speaking after Sunday’s tense win, Gambhir rejected the notion that only big scores shape results, arguing that the sport’s essence lies in collective effort.
“Glad you’re talking about every contribution because for many years we’ve only spoken about certain contributions,” Gambhir said. “This is a team sport, and this will always remain a team sport. For me, Shivam’s two boundaries are as important as Sanju’s 97 because if he hadn’t hit those two boundaries, you wouldn’t even be talking about the 97-run knock.”
The India coach, known for his forthright views, stressed that the philosophy of valuing every input will define his tenure. “The big contribution makes headlines. The small contribution, the contribution that can help the team win, cross that line, are very important. And that’s why I say that this is going to be the philosophy going forward till I am there.”
While data analytics has become central to T20 planning, Gambhir revealed he leans on instinct rather than spreadsheets. “I don’t believe in data, honestly. I’ve never seen the data. I don’t even know what data is all about. I absolutely do not believe in it, because I feel it’s more about instinct,” he stated, even as the team continues to work closely with analyst Hari Prasad. “T20 cricket is about instinct and backing your instinct as well. Whatever knowledge I have about the game and T20 format, I try and probably give it to the captain, try and help him out as much as I can.”
Attention now shifts to Thursday’s semi-final against England at Mumbai’s Wankhede Stadium, a venue Gambhir labelled “tough” and an opposition he called “world-class.”
“They’re a quality team, they’ve got a lot of quality players as well,” he noted. “Hopefully, we can turn up and see that we have another opportunity to do something special for the team, for the country, and hopefully we play our best game as well. That is going to be very important.”
With Gambhir’s emphasis on unity and instinct guiding the camp, India will enter the knockout stage embracing a culture where every run saved, every single rotated, and every boundary struck carries equal weight.
