Rosenior offers major Chelsea fitness updates on Gittens & Estevao for Newcastle clash

Liam Rosenior has delivered a mixed injury bulletin ahead of Chelsea’s Premier League meeting with Newcastle United on Saturday, confirming that winger Jamie Gittens is available again while teenage talent Estevao Willian remains sidelined with the hamstring complaint that has kept him out of the last five matches.

Speaking at Friday’s pre-match press conference, the Chelsea head coach said: “Jamie is back involved,” ending a six-week absence that began when the 20-year-old tore his hamstring during the 3-1 victory over West Ham on 28 January.

The news is timely for Rosenior, who has relied on Cole Palmer and Enzo Fernandez to fill wide roles after being left with only Pedro Neto and Alejandro Garnacho as natural wingers during the recent fixture squeeze.

Estevao, however, will not be risked at St James’ Park. The 17-year-old felt tightness in training earlier this month and, although the injury is described as less severe than Gittens’, Rosenior is taking a cautious approach.

“We have to be more careful with Este; we don’t want it reoccurring,” he explained. “We will see what he is like for Tuesday’s game,” referring to the Champions League second-leg showdown with Paris Saint-Germain at Stamford Bridge.

Chelsea travel north smarting from Wednesday’s 5-2 defeat in the French capital, a result that leaves them with a mountain to climb if they are to progress past the round of 16. Balancing recovery and rotation will therefore be critical, yet the club can ill-afford a league slip: the Blues sit fifth in the table, level on points with sixth-placed Liverpool and clinging to the final Champions League qualification berth on goal difference alone.

With that backdrop, Gittens’ return offers welcome depth on the flank, while Estevao’s potential availability for the PSG rematch provides a glimmer of hope for a squad still juggling injuries and congested schedules.
