Real Madrid defender could play first minutes under Arbeloa against Celta Vigo

Madrid travel to Balaídos on Friday night needing a victory to stay in touch with La Liga leaders Barcelona after back-to-back defeats, and manager Álvaro Arbeloa is facing a deepening defensive crisis. Centre-backs Éder Militão and David Alaba, loanee Dean Huijsen, and first-choice left-back Álvaro Carreras are all unavailable, forcing the interim coach to consider options he has so far preferred to leave on the margins.
Chief among them is Ferland Mendy. The 30-year-old French left-back has featured for only 112 minutes across three appearances this season and, crucially, has not yet played a single minute since Arbeloa replaced Xabi Alonso in January. Although Mendy has been named in five consecutive squads since shaking off his latest muscle complaint, he has remained unused.
That streak could end in Vigo. Carreras sits out through suspension after accumulating bookings, leaving Arbeloa to choose between Mendy and Fran García to fill the void. Previous selection patterns suggest limited faith in either back-up: the coach has instead deployed midfielder Eduardo Camavinga out of position. Yet Camavinga is currently hampered by a severe toothache and is unlikely to be ready from the start, opening a path for Mendy to make his long-awaited bow under the new regime.
Minutes would serve the Frenchman well beyond Friday’s encounter. With his contract running until 2027 but no indication that he features in Madrid’s long-term blueprint, a summer move is plausible—provided he can demonstrate fitness and form to prospective buyers after a year spent largely on the sidelines.
Real Madrid therefore have more than three points at stake in Galicia; for Mendy, the match represents a rare audition that could shape the remainder of his career.
