Erling Haaland remains atop the Premier League scoring chart with the season’s final weeks approaching, but a winter dip in form has left the door ajar for Brentford’s Igor Thiago to mount a late challenge for the 2025/26 Golden Boot.

The Manchester City striker, a two-time winner of the prize, roared out of the blocks in August and September yet has managed only three league goals since Christmas. A stretch of eight matches without an open-play goal ended on 11 February when he struck against Fulham, and an FA Cup hat-trick versus Liverpool on 4 April suggested the 25-year-old may be rediscovering his most ruthless touch ahead of the run-in.

Haaland’s lead, however, has been trimmed by Igor Thiago’s relentless consistency. The Brazilian’s five goals in four November outings earned him Premier League Player of the Month honours, and he has continued to find the net with enough regularity to sit within striking distance of the summit. With both forwards expected to feature in every remaining fixture, the duel for individual supremacy could mirror the title race itself.

City have not relied solely on their talisman. January arrival Antoine Semenyo has eased the burden, scoring 14 times including the winner against Leeds United on 28 February when Haaland was rested. Joao Pedro climbed into fourth place after a hat-trick versus Aston Villa in early March, ensuring a cluster of pursuers should Haaland or Thiago falter.

Elsewhere, Mohamed Salah’s imminent departure from Liverpool has coincided with a dramatic collapse in output. The Egyptian’s 29-goal, 18-assist masterpiece last term set a Premier League record for goal contributions, yet he has fallen well short of those standards this season and will not factor into the final reckoning.

Assists serve as the first tie-breaker for the Golden Boot, followed by minutes per goal, ensuring every pass and finish could prove decisive. The table, updated after Manchester United’s 1-1 draw with Leeds on 13 April, sets the stage for a compelling finale.

Haaland previously shattered the single-season record with 36 goals in 2022/23 and backed it up with 27 the following year. Whether he adds a third Golden Boot or is overtaken by Thiago will be one of the season’s defining storylines.
