Orlando City in Advanced Talks to Sign Antoine Griezmann

Orlando City SC has opened formal negotiations aimed at bringing Atletico Madrid and France forward Antoine Griezmann to Major League Soccer, sources confirmed to ESPN on Thursday. While the discussions are described as “active,” no agreement has been finalized between the Lions and the 2018 World Cup winner.

Griezmann, 32, is under contract with Atletico Madrid through 2027, but that has not deterred Orlando officials from exploring a deal. MLS rules give Orlando City his discovery rights, granting the Florida club priority in signing the attacker should he move to the league. At least three additional teams have registered interest, yet Orlando’s procedural advantage positions the club at the front of the queue.

The timing of any transfer remains fluid. Griezmann is expected to represent France at this summer’s World Cup in North America, and sources indicate the player will decide whether to complete a move during the current window or wait until the summer.

Griezmann has long viewed MLS as the final chapter of his career. “I’ve always said it, my target is to end up in MLS,” he told ESPN in 2023. “It’s my objective, to be there and end my career there, to be able to enjoy the sports there. I’m a big fan.”

Since rejoining Atletico Madrid in 2021, Griezmann has recorded 69 goals in 187 appearances across all competitions. Limited to 832 minutes this season, he has still managed six goals, though his overall influence at the Spanish club has waned.

His trophy haul includes the 2018 Europa League and Super Cup with Atletico, the 2021 Copa del Rey with Barcelona, and international honors highlighted by the 2018 FIFA World Cup and 2021 Nations League with France. Individual accolades feature third-place Ballon d’Or finishes in 2016 and 2018.

Orlando City has yet to comment publicly on the negotiations, and Atletico Madrid has not responded to requests for comment.
