Official: Barcelona starting lineup against Villarreal | La Liga MD 26

Barcelona have confirmed the XI that will walk out at Spotify Camp Nou for tonight’s Matchday 26 meeting with Villarreal, and the headline change sees Alejandro Balde recalled to the first XI after two games on the periphery. The Spanish full-back slots straight back into the left side of defence, displacing Joao Cancelo, while Jules Kounde retains his place on the opposite flank.

In the heart of the back line, Pau Cubarsi is handed a recall alongside Eric Garcia; the teenager’s inclusion comes at the expense of Gerard Martin, who is suspended. Between the posts, Joan Garcia continues as the Blaugrana’s last line of defence.

Midfield has been the subject of much debate after Frenkie de Jong was ruled out through injury, and Hansi Flick has elected to leave Pedri on the bench to avoid any unnecessary risk. The engine room will instead be manned by Marc Bernal, Dani Olmo and Fermin Lopez, a trio charged with dictating tempo against a Villarreal side renowned for their pressing game.

Further forward, birthday boy Ferran Torres leads the line on his 26th, taking over from Robert Lewandowski. The Spaniard will be supported by wingers Lamine Yamal and Raphinha, whose pace and direct running will be crucial in stretching the Yellow Submarine’s back five.

A win tonight would open up a four-point cushion at the summit of La Liga with little more than a third of the campaign remaining, adding extra weight to every pass, press and shot in the Catalan capital.
