Newcastle United 1-3 Man City, FA Cup: Marmoush Double Seals Quarter-Final Spot For Guardiola's Men

St. James’ Park, Saturday – Omar Marmoush struck twice in the second half to propel Manchester City into the FA Cup quarter-finals and complete a 3-1 comeback victory over Newcastle United, the side they also eliminated from the EFL Cup semi-finals last month.

Eddie Howe’s men began with intent, forcing last-ditch interventions from Abdukodir Khusanov and Nico Gonzalez before Harvey Barnes arrowed Sandro Tonali’s threaded pass into the top-right corner to give the hosts an 18th-minute lead.

City levelled six minutes before the interval when Jeremy Doku’s low delivery evaded everyone and reached Savinho at the far post for a simple tap-in.

The turnaround was completed two minutes after the restart. Aaron Ramsdale parried Matheus Nunes’ cutback into the path of Marmoush, who smashed home from close range.

The Egyptian forward sealed the win on 67 minutes, lashing a powerful right-footed effort past Ramsdale from just outside the area after again combining with Nunes.

Pep Guardiola’s side join Chelsea, Arsenal and Liverpool in the last-eight draw, having registered an expected-goals tally of 3.43 from 21 shots. Newcastle managed 1.14 xG from 11 attempts.

Marmoush, who has scored seven of his 14 City goals against Newcastle in only five meetings, is staking an increasingly strong claim for more minutes as the business end of the season approaches.

For Newcastle, the wait for a first domestic cup triumph goes on, while City continue their pursuit of a seventh FA Cup crown.
