Instead, the focus has shifted to a fresh trio: Brighton’s Roberto De Zerbi, former Bayern Munich boss Julian Nagelsmann, and Belgium coach Roberto Martinez. Mauricio Pochettino and Ipswich’s Kieran McKenna continue to be admired internally, yet neither is viewed as a frontrunner at this stage.

Carrick’s immediate task is to lift a squad whose confidence was visibly dented on Tyneside.
