Marcus Rashford: Barcelona dream under threat in latest development

Marcus Rashford’s hopes of making his loan move to FC Barcelona permanent are hanging in the balance after fresh reports from Spain indicated the Catalan giants are exploring cheaper alternatives to the €30 million option they negotiated with Manchester United last summer.

Rashford, 26, arrived at Camp Nou on a season-long deal and hit the ground running, registering 10 goals and 13 assists in 38 matches across all competitions. His early form suggested Barcelona had secured a bargain, yet his influence has dipped markedly since the December break. The forward has not found the net in any of his last seven appearances, stretching back to the end of January’s fixture against Elche, and has increasingly been used as a back-up by the coaching staff.

Despite the slump, Rashford has repeatedly expressed his desire to remain in Catalonia, and club officials had initially signalled a willingness to trigger the €30 million clause inserted in last summer’s loan agreement. However, Barcelona’s delicate financial landscape has forced a rethink. Sources close to the club say the Blaugrana are “aware that paying the €30 million price tag for Marcus Rashford won’t be easy,” prompting sporting directors to scour the market for more economical solutions.

The search has led them to two familiar faces: Moroccan winger Ez Abde, currently on loan at Real Betis, and Catalan attacker Jan Virgili, plying his trade at Real Mallorca. Barcelona retained 20% of Abde’s rights and fully half of Virgili’s, meaning either return would require only a modest outlay. Securing one of the pair, the club believes, would free resources for a priority pursuit of a new centre-forward—an area that could be weakened if Robert Lewandowski departs.

Crucially, any green light for Rashford’s permanent transfer is also tied to institutional stability. The final decision rests with the next board, and the outcome of Joan Laporta’s re-election campaign could yet determine whether the England international’s Barcelona dream lives or dies.
