From United’s viewpoint, the development is less a fire-sale than a recalibration. The club invested in Ugarte as a potential midfield enforcer, yet coaching staff have stopped short of entrusting him with a commanding role despite the team’s well-documented inconsistency in central areas. Allowing Mendes to sound out suitors may therefore be a pragmatic step: if a fee can be recovered and reinvested in a profile better aligned with tactical demands, the hierarchy would regard the manoeuvre as sound squad management rather than an admission of failure.

For Juventus, Napoli and Milan, the equation is one of value. Each side employs a tactical scheme that prizes ball recovery and quick transitions, attributes Ugarte showcased in Lisbon and, intermittently, on the European stage. Should the asking price drop to an attractive level, what began as a casual enquiry could accelerate into concrete negotiations.

Whatever the outcome, the episode underscores a wider truth at elite level: recruitment is only half the battle; integration completes the picture.
