Manchester United academy midfielder Jack Fletcher has been handed a six-match ban and a £1,500 fine by the Football Association after being found guilty of using discriminatory language during an EFL Trophy fixture against Barnsley last October.
An FA disciplinary panel ruled that the 19-year-old “acted inappropriately and/or used abusive and/or insulting language,” prompting the governing body to impose both the suspension and financial penalty. Fletcher must also complete a mandatory FA educational programme focused on equality and inclusion.
The incident occurred in the closing stages of United’s Under-21 meeting with the Tykes, when Fletcher directed a remark that was later judged to carry homophobic connotations. The player accepted culpability immediately after the match and issued a public apology.
“I am sincerely sorry for the offensive word I used in the heat of the moment,” Fletcher said. “Even though I had no intention of using the term as a homophobic slur, I fully understand that this language is unacceptable and I apologized immediately after the match. I want to make it clear that this momentary lapse in judgment in no way reflects my beliefs or values.”
The son of former Scotland international and current Manchester United first-team coach Darren Fletcher, the youngster has been at the club since primary-school age and is regarded as one of the more experienced members of the Under-21 squad that competes in the EFL Trophy.
Manchester United moved quickly to underline its zero-tolerance stance on discrimination, releasing a statement that read: “Manchester United has worked with Jack to strengthen his understanding of discriminatory language and why it is harmful. The club will continue to support the FA’s mandatory educational training to ensure such incidents are not repeated.”
Fletcher will now miss the next six competitive fixtures for United’s Under-21 side, including upcoming Premier League 2 matches and any further EFL Trophy involvement, and must satisfy the FA that he has completed the stipulated equality training before returning to action.
