Luis Enrique makes Man United stance clear in latest statement on his PSG future

Paris Saint-Germain manager Luis Enrique has effectively ended speculation linking him with the Manchester United hot seat, declaring himself “so happy at Paris Saint-Germain” when quizzed on his future.

The 55-year-old Spaniard had emerged as a reported primary target for INEOS, United’s new football operation overseers, after guiding PSG to a historic treble last season that included the club’s first-ever Champions League crown. With Enrique’s contract set to expire next summer, whispers of a potential Old Trafford swoop intensified, particularly after United dismissed Ruben Amorim in December and installed club legend Michael Carrick as caretaker until season’s end.

Carrick’s interim reign has been nothing short of spectacular: four Premier League matches, four victories, including statement wins over Manchester City, Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur. The upturn has prompted growing calls inside Old Trafford to hand the 43-year-old the role permanently, even though senior figures had initially planned to wait until summer before making a permanent appointment.

Despite Carrick’s storybook start, former captain Gary Neville revealed this week that a club source insists United remain committed to recruiting an external candidate. A galaxy of names—Oliver Glasner, Andoni Iraola, Enzo Maresca, Gareth Southgate, Eddie Howe, Carlo Ancelotti and Enrique—have been floated as contenders.

Yet any hopes United held of luring Enrique away from the French capital appear to have been dashed. Speaking ahead of PSG’s weekend fixture, the ex-Barcelona and Spain boss offered a blunt assessment of his situation: “I am so happy at Paris Saint-Germain.” The concise declaration, relayed by transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, leaves little room for interpretation and forces United’s hierarchy to widen their managerial search with immediate effect.

Enrique’s trophy-laden résumé—two La Liga titles and the 2015 Champions League with Barcelona, plus back-to-back Ligue 1 triumphs and European glory with PSG—had made him an attractive proposition for a United side desperate to return to the summit of English and European football. Now, with the Spaniard reaffirming his contentment in Paris, United must pivot to alternative targets as they plot a course beyond Carrick’s interim stewardship.
