Lisandro Martinez says he has studied every match of Manchester United’s golden age under Sir Alex Ferguson and is determined to help the club author a new chapter of dominance.
Speaking to TNT Sports, the Argentine defender described Ferguson’s 26-year reign as “history” and revealed that the Scot’s trophy-laden teams have become his personal benchmark for success at Old Trafford.
“This club, for me, is really, really special,” Martinez told pundit and former United midfielder Owen Hargreaves, in comments published on the club’s official website. “I watched all the games in the [Sir] Alex Ferguson era and wow, it was like history.”
Ferguson’s tenure delivered all 13 of United’s Premier League titles, the famous 1998-99 treble and a second Champions League crown in 2008. Since his retirement in 2013, the club have failed to add another league championship, a drought Martinez is eager to end.
“Football is, for me, about that too: put your name there [in the history books],” he added. “I hope soon that we are in the same moment because I want to achieve big things here. It’s really special and I hope soon that this club will go up again.”
United currently sit fourth in the Premier League and return to action on 23 February with a trip to Everton at Goodison Park.
