Last-over drama! Pakistan file complaint after controversial DRS decision in Bangladesh ODI
Mirpur: Pakistan have formally lodged a complaint with match referee Neeyamur Rashid after a contentious Decision Review System incident in the final over of the third ODI against Bangladesh, a match the hosts won by 11 runs to secure their first bilateral series triumph over Pakistan in 11 years.
The flashpoint arrived with Pakistan needing 12 runs from the last two deliveries and captain Shaheen Shah Afridi on strike. Bangladesh spinner Rishad Hossain sent down a leg-side delivery that on-field umpire Kumar Dharmasena signalled as a wide. Bangladesh appealed for lbw, and after a review was sought, the third umpire detected a faint spike on UltraEdge, overturning the wide call. Although the review was ultimately lost, the reversal left Pakistan requiring boundaries off the final ball, and Afridi was stumped to end the contest.
Pakistan’s grievance centres on two points: head coach Mike Hesson contends that the review request came only after a replay appeared on the stadium’s big screen, contravening protocol, and that the 15-second window for a DRS challenge had already elapsed. Hesson met Rashid post-match to present the team’s concerns; the referee responded that Bangladesh had gained no unfair advantage, but the conversation is now part of the match record.
The defeat capped a tense finish and handed Bangladesh a 2-1 series victory, their first in any ODI series against Pakistan since 2013.
