Laporta wins Barça presidential elections with 66% of vote
Joan Laporta will remain FC Barcelona president until 2031 after securing a resounding 66 percent of the vote in Sunday’s elections, extending the mandate he first reclaimed in 2021. Tens of thousands of club members converged on polling stations throughout Catalunya for a ballot widely viewed as pivotal for the club’s future direction.
Laporta’s only rival, Victor Font, had centered his campaign on the incumbent’s strained relationship with Lionel Messi, yet the message failed to sway the electorate. The 63-year-old Laporta argued throughout the race that his experience from 2003-2010 and his current tenure make him the sole guarantor of on-pitch progress and financial stability, cautioning that a Font victory could plunge Barça back into economic peril.
Confidence radiated from Laporta’s camp well before the official count: with more than an hour of voting still to run, SPORT reported that he had already reserved a celebratory dinner at a nearby restaurant. The scene turned festive as first-team players, fresh from a 5-2 league win over Sevilla earlier in the day, arrived to cast their ballots and later joined the president-elect in celebration.
