Key Barcelona player doubtful ahead of Champions League clash with Newcastle

Barcelona’s preparations for Wednesday’s Champions League round-of-16 first leg at Newcastle United have been clouded by a mounting defensive crisis, with centre-back Eric Garcia now rated doubtful because of muscle discomfort, club outlet Barca Universal has reported.
Garcia’s potential setback compounds an already depleted back line: Jules Koundé and Alejandro Balde remain sidelined with hamstring problems, leaving coach Hansi Flick to explore contingency plans only 48 hours before kick-off at St James’ Park.
Should Garcia fail a late fitness test, Ronald Araújo is poised to rejoin the starting XI. The Uruguayan has seen limited minutes of late but would be thrust into a pivotal role on English soil.
Flick has narrowed his options to two reshuffled defensive schemes. In the first, Araújo would slot in at right-back, flanking a central pairing of teenage prodigy Pau Cubarsí and Gerard Martín, while João Cancelo operates on the left. The alternative sees Cancelo revert to the right, with Araújo partnering Cubarsí centrally and Martín again deployed on the left flank.
With senior numbers stretched, Barcelona are expected to promote academy reinforcements; centre-backs Álvaro Cortés and Xavi Espart are in contention to make the travelling squad and provide emergency cover from the bench.
Barcelona departed for the north-east of England on Monday knowing that any further defensive setbacks could force Flick into an even younger, more makeshift unit for a tie that could set the tone for their European ambitions this season.
