Jorginho withdraws criticism of Chappell Roan
São Paulo—Former Chelsea and Arsenal midfielder Jorginho has retracted public criticism aimed at Grammy-winning pop star Chappell Roan, acknowledging that a security guard who confronted his wife Catherine Harding and 11-year-old daughter Ada at a São Paulo hotel breakfast last month was not employed by the singer.
The 34-year-old Italy international, now playing for Flamengo in Rio de Janeiro, initially used Instagram to accuse Roan’s team of intimidating his family after Ada recognised the American artist. Roan responded that she was unaware of the episode and that her personal security had not been involved.
In a follow-up post on Monday, Jorginho stated that subsequent investigations—bolstered by the guard’s own admission—showed the individual was representing another act staying at the same hotel. “Chappell Roan made a public statement, reached out privately to Catherine, and our teams also spoke directly,” Jorginho wrote. “It became clear that she had no knowledge of what took place at breakfast and had not asked anyone to approach them.”
The clarification comes after the story ignited headlines across Brazil, prompting Rio de Janeiro mayor Eduardo Cavaliere to threaten banning Roan from future performances in the city. Jorginho stressed that neither he nor his family condone online harassment. “I will always stand up for my family,” he added, “but I also know how to recognise when things were not quite what they seemed at first.”
With both parties now in direct communication, Jorginho declared the matter “closed,” expressing regret over the distress caused to Roan, his wife, and his daughter.
